The Power of Community

“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” – Kurt Vonnegut

Humans are social beings living in an environment that, especially in the United States, celebrates individuality. Being a part of a community, whether it’s a close-knit neighborhood, a sports team, or a church small group, can have a profound impact on each one of us.

In a health and wellness context, a community can provide accountability and motivation. Together, we can pool resources, skills, and ideas to achieve change where change is needed. From grassroots movements to charity initiatives, working together amplifies our ability to create positive change in the world.

And, when we identify strongly with a community and enrich our social lives, research shows us that life satisfaction and self-reported happiness increases. Social connections release hormones like oxytocin and serotonin, which contribute greatly to feelings of joy and well-being.

You have likely heard the African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” In an article about tracing the origins of proverbs like this, Neal Lester, a humanities professor at Arizona State University who specializes in African-American literary studies, summarizes: "The Africanist perspective is more about community, it's more about collaboration. It's less about what we can do individually…the essence of the proverb speaks to a certain worldview that challenges Western individualism".

This is what the thrive mentality is all about. If you want to go fast, bounce around from fad diet to fad diet. Try every popular supplement and all the latest TikTok workout trends. But, if you want to go far, get into a community, roll up your sleeves, and start the hard work of cultivating your sense of thrive.

In my business, as a health coach and wellness strategist, I want to nurture a community of individuals - and impact the world around me. I want to create a ripple effect of positivity and support that extends far beyond myself and my circle of friends.
